  • Free-radicals are atoms with an unpaired electron. Free radicals can cause harmful oxidation that damages cell membranes, which leads to an acceleration of the aging process and can also lead to other more dangerous ailments. Lack of sleep, smoking, over exposure to sunlight and excessive drinking can all contribute to the formation of free-radicals. Free-radicals are countered by substance that contain anti-oxidants.

    An antioxidant is one a of several organic substances, including vitamins C and E, vitamin A, lycopene, selenium, and a group known as the carotenoids. These substances are believed to be effective in helping to prevent a variety of diseases. Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to a host of illnesses. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals as the natural by-product of normal cell processes.
